Restructuring the Geeklog Documentation
From GeeklogWiki
Motivation
As you can see, the documentation for Geeklog 1.x in this wiki has been divided into two sections:
In retrospect, this was a bad idea. The two versions aren't really that different that they would require two separate documentation trees. A lot of content has since been duplicated, while other content is still only available in one of the two trees even though it would be useful in both.
So let's try and not make the same mistake again with Geeklog 1.5 ...
The Plan
The idea is to start a new version-neutral tree, Geeklog Documentation, pick the best articles from the 1.3 and 1.4 trees, and add them to this new tree.
- Prefer articles with the more descriptive or verbose page names, as the name of a page is also used as its headline. So instead of "InstallNew14" use "New Installation".
- The 1.4 documentation has a lot of ugly and non-intuitive page names which often also contain the version number, e.g. "ConfigFile14". Let's try and get rid of those.
- If the better or more up-to-date article is in the 1.4 tree but the better page name is in the 1.3 tree, move the content from the 1.4 page to the 1.3 page. We want the best content and the best page names - the 1.3 / 1.4 trees will go away eventually. Some temporary inconsistency is inevitable and acceptable.
- New content (for 1.5 or things that were missing anyway) should again be using descriptive page names.
- Some content will be depending on the version, e.g. the installation is different for Geeklog 1.4 and 1.5. Information that's specific to an older version should contain a note stating that (and the version(s) it refers to). Information relevant for the current version (i.e. Geeklog 1.5) should try and avoid mentioning a version number unless it would be really confusing otherwise.
Orphaned Pages
We will end up with quite a few orphaned / abandoned / outdated pages. Only the admins can delete them, though. If you see a page that should be deleted, please point it out to one of the sysops (listed here). Thanks.
